Completely agree with your reflections all around. I’m finding that after watching both that Celine plays with the ideas of possibilities which is why her characters feel v fleeting to me. Regardless her movies remain rich texts that I enjoy devouring.

In terms of playing with the ideas of possibilities, it’s reflected in the second act, after the wedding scene, Dakota was like, “You don’t even know me anymore.” And that’s also the scene when it hits me they didn’t know each other anymore it was like the ideas of each other because of what they had. After the movie, looking back on it, that really sat with me. And it made me think that each man was a big what if haha

oh do tell! for me i watched materialists and it was good but wasn’t life-shattering like past lives. maybe bc past lives is closer to home? idk
